Jing'an Villa was a European-style lane villa complex built in the 1930s with investments from the wealthy Zhang Jingjiang (mentor to President Chiang Kai-shek), becoming one of Shanghai’s most iconic shikumen-style Western residences. In 1942, H.H. Kung (Kong Xiangxi, the famouse banker) acquired a majority of the property and later entrusted the American-owned China Realty Company to manage its leasing. The rent was exorbitantly high—reportedly even payable in gold bars.

At the time, the main alley of Jing'an Villa was wide enough for two cars to pass side by side, adorned with intricately patterned floor tiles, garden courtyards, and Baroque-style embellishments—luxuries that caused a sensation across Shanghai’s elite circles. The neighborhood attracted luminaries such as Cai Yuanpei (renowned educator), Yu Youren (calligrapher and statesman), and Zheng Xiaoqiu (film pioneer), making it a microcosm of Republican-era high society.

As a model of urban renewal, Jing'an Villa not only preserves a century of history but also stands as a living testament to the evolution of Shanghai’s East-meets-West cultural legacy—where the whispers of the past still echo through its red-brick lanes.

Shanghai Time Art Space exquisitely preserves the architectural DNA of Jing'an Villa's heritage townhouses: red-brick facades, vintage steel windows, oak staircases, and terrace attics—every detail breathes the romance of 1920s Shanghai. More than an art venue, it's a living intersection where history converses with modernity.

As an award-winning urban renewal prototype and Shanghai’s most iconic cultural space (Shanghai Fashion 100+), its curatorial alchemy marries heritage architecture with contemporary art. Visitors don't just view exhibitions—they embark on an immersive journey through Shanghai’s cultural zeitgeist.
