A must-see for fans of physical storytelling and East Asian aesthetics.

Convergence is an interdisciplinary dance production that explores the deep connections between Chinese dance and martial arts. Developed by Hong Kong Dance Company’s Artistic Director Yang Yuntao in collaboration with Southern-style kung fu masters since 2018, the work investigates the fluidity of movement, the philosophy of the body, and the expressive potential between stillness and motion. Premiering online in 2020, the production has since toured internationally, including performances in Beijing, Tokyo, Sydney, and Bangkok.

The piece has earned critical acclaim, winning the Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Online Production (2022) and seeing its excerpt Whispers of the Pines honored with the 13th China Dance Lotus Award for Contemporary Dance (2023). Blending dynamic choreography with martial arts precision, Convergence reflects years of research into how these two disciplines inform and enhance one another.

Presented in partnership with West Kowloon Cultural District, the performance is part of WestK Shanghai Week 2025, showcasing Hong Kong’s innovative approach to cross-disciplinary dance. The Hong Kong Dance Company, established in 1981, continues to be a leading force in promoting Chinese dance with contemporary vision, touring globally and engaging in cultural exchange.
